The Harmon's Mountain Heritage Fine Arts Award

The Harmon/Hutchings family in Banff has awards each year the Harmon's Mountain Heritage Scholarship for Studies in the Fine Arts by recognizing the creative achievements of Banff high school students. Each year an applicant receives a cheque for $1,000.00 when they begin their further studies.

Harmons Mountain Heritage is a family owned and operated business started by photographer Byron Harmon in 1903 which presently owns, operates, and manages the Harmons building in the 100 block of Banff Avenue. Throughout it’s history it has been a supporter of art and culture in Banff and the Canadian Rockies.

The family offers an annual scholarship of $1000.00 to a graduating student of Banff Community High School for studies in the fine arts. This scholarship is applied for during the Grade 12 year or within 18 months following graduation.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide acknowledgment and tangible support for the importance of art and culture in our lives and in our world. Areas of study which apply to the scholarship include, but are not limited to, drawing, painting, sculpture, music, theatre studies, film, photography, creative writing, and multi-media studies.

It is the Harmon family's intention is to assist individuals who will be pursuing careers in the arts. Applications are reviewed annually in June by the family and the successful applicant is notified personally. Public announcement of the scholarship is included in the Graduation Ceremonies of BCHS.

In order to apply a student must submit a completed application form with an example of their creative work by June 1 of each year. The scholarship is awarded upon receipt of proof of registration in an accepted course of studies. Since 2004 is the beginning year for this scholarship, applications were accepted until June 20. Applications received after the June deadline will be considered with the scholarship applications for the following year.

Applicable courses of study include university programmes, art schools, community colleges, and private study or apprenticeship.

As well as providing this annual scholarship a fund has been established which allows for the flexibility of awarding more than one scholarship from time to time when the quality and number of applications warrant.
